Culd be a few things, my security light stays on because my tumbler (ignition) is going bad and its not reading the key right. Sounds like your having problems with your ignition and when the light comes on it will not let you start your car. But trust me a new ignition ISNT cheap and no it wont go away with a new key ( A lot of people think getting a new key will make their problem go away when it will not because they think its the key when its not.) Need anythign else let me/us know. Hope this helps

Its the vats system getting old mine does the same thing.I had issues with mine a few times the light would come on and car wouldn't turn over till light went out...figured out if i would jiggle key up and down while its in the ignition before i turn the key it works fine..or there how-to's listed the show how to bypass the system all together much cheaper than trying to replace it

You can bypass the V.A.T.S. system by reading the resistance of the chip in the key and placing a resistor of that same value (+/- 5%) in line with the V.A.T.S. wiring, making it think the key is in at all times. Locate the pair of V.A.T.S. wires running from the ignition switch down the steering column and to the V.A.T.S. These wires are paired within a plastic jacket that has a seam up the middle. The jacket is usually White, Orange or Black. The entire jacket, wires and all is only about 14awg in size. The two wires within the jacket are very small, about 22awg in size. Make sure you have the right wires as the air bag wires are similarly run and covered, but I think they are in a labeled yellow jacket. Strip the V.A.T.S. wires back and look for the resistance of the key in the wires (with the key in the ignition) to verify before you start making changes!
Cut the 2 wires and place the resistor between them on the computer side, not the key side. Tape it up well (making sure the legs of the resistor do not touch of course) and shove it up out of the way.

You can also have the VATS disabled by your friendly neighborhood tuner.

Man I hope so too! At one of my shops we had a guy that thought he was holding a speaker wire and he "popped" the speaker with a Makita battery to see which one it was. In actuality was an air bag wire and he blew all 4 of them on a brand new BMW. That is a sound that no installer ever wants to hear, especially on a brand new car!:roflmao:

http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#pass_key Props to Rob for having such a great site. This is the best write up on this I've ever seen for our cars. And yes, the air bag wires are very clearly marked.
