I hate to even post this knowing the members who aren't subject to heavy corrosion can pretty much ignore it but to the unlucky ones who live in the rust belt I have some questions.
First off, my 95 is a beautiful car - on top. Underneath it has seen at least 8 winters of wet salted slush. The car sat exposed for one winter and water has found its way into the interior. I have removed all of that and have a partially decayed floor pan. Not destroyed but looking bad with some holes.
What I'm looking for are products and methods that have worked for others. Right now I have cleaned and painted the affected top side areas with Chassis Saver (tm). It is the equivalent of POR15. I intend to back the holes up with riveted in sheet metal and fiberglass mat. To the underside I am using a product called ALL METAL. It is basically a bondo but is metallic in that it can be drilled and tapped.
The overall problem is cleaning the underside of the car. I have made some stupid - stupid mistakes over the years like oil spray and undercoating. The undercoating is the worst thing I have done. I am trying to cleanse the bottom of the car to apply the Chassis Saver, which btw seems to really seal the surface but like the All Metal, it needs a dry blank surface. Rust that isn't loose is fine and actually creates a good surface for the Chassis Saver to coat but any residue, even that left behind with lacquer thinner isn't allowed. Does anyone have some knowledge and suggestions on how to prep the surface. There are some water based solvents that will be hard to apply but their detriment is cost. I am also struggling hard to even remove the undercoating. I have used rags and solvent but this is nearly a monumental task.
If anyone here has any kind of suggestion other than selling off the car or hiring it done, please post. I am asking everywhere I go for suggestions and just maybe someone will read this and have something new. Thanks....
