There's a bleed valve you have to open.

Last time we did one we hand bleed it by fillingthe resavoir and pumping the shaft (hehe) for a long time until the fluid worked itself all through the system.
This was a LT1 style one though, not an LS1. They are a little different.

See the thing sticking out on the right? That's the bleeder. The capped one on the left is for the line. Just use a deep well socket.

I can tell you that I had my slave cylinder off of my 01 and I saw no bleeder. I think it generally works the air up and out by itself. However, if you have to bleed it manually you can disconnect the flexible line from the clutch and depress the check valve at the end of the line while someone depresses the clutch. Just like brakes, the clutch has to be floored until you release the spring loaded check valve. Do this several times and you will empty the little reservoir so keep that filled. You have the option of using a power bleeder rather than have someone depress the clutch while you hold the valve open but that's up to you. Any way, this is how it works on the LS1s.

BTW, I used a ford slave line tool to disconnect it the line from the clutch. It was $5 from autozone rental. I didn't bother to return the tool so it's basically a sale now. You can try to use a couple of screwdrivers to release the catch mechanism but it was just too difficult for me that way. When you do get the line to release you might hear a brief hiss as a small amount of fluid (or air) will escape for a moment. This causes no harm. The check valve at the end of the line has a strong spring in it and you can use a small screwdriver to push it back for the bleed.
