let me start off by saying that i have no knowledge about rear ends. from what i have heard i have a 10 bolt(93 trans am). my friend says that he has a 12 bolt that he would sell me for $80. is this a good price? and if i do buy it should i do the swap myself with friends, or have a shop do it for me?

No he doesn't.
If you got a full 12 bolt that would bolt in for 80 dollars...I go emo and slit my wrists.

Hmmm......If it sounds to good to be true, ahhhh, well you know the expression
New 12 bolts cost about $2100 w/o kits. My question would be why such a low-ball price?

Probably out of an old truck and therefore wouldn't have the right mounts, probably drum brakes and an open differential.

The spring perches, LCA mounts and Tq arm mount all need to be there. If any one of those 3 is either missing or not in the correct place then he's just wasting your time.
Also count the cover bolts and compare to how yours looks.

You're right, no such thing as a 12 bolt in any F-body from 1982-2002.
Count the # of bolts on the back cover.

Not much more than stock HP levels. FYI the 10-bolt is the factory rear end, so its the same as what you have already.
