I've looked and read as much as i can out out there about the 05/06 being better gtos than the initial 04.
Unfortunately my wallet and heart can only bear the burden of an 04(trust me on this!) so what i want to know is how can i make up for the 50 extra ponies i'd be short so that i dont feel like i've got my tail between my legs each time an Ls2 pulls next to me?
Thanks guys:LS1LT1flag:

For the most part, you are only talking about .25 second difference on average between an LS1 and LS2.

Long tubes, cold air, and tune will get an '04 in the 12's provided the conditions are right. Track prep, launch, and driving. That is an M6. A4's pick up quite a bit with a tune, usually .3-.5 second since they are really hampered by torque management.

There is always a cam and heads, drag radials, suspension work, etc.

LS1, for whatever reason, gets a bad rap in the GTO. But its the same engine that was in the '01-'02 F-Body and nobody ever complains about that...

Well, for one the GTO is quite a bit heftier than the f-body, so the LS1 doesn't quite go as far with the weight. And plus...when you can get the LS2, you may as well. More power, more potential. Hell if the LS2 came in the f-bodies everyone would tell you to try and get one of those if you could.

Other then that, I agree. Basic bolt ons, tires, and a little suspension work will keep you hanging with them for the most part.

But it has better gearing to make up for it, talking M6 here. Mine ran 13.25 when it was still stock. There were some that went 13.1x with theirs. I probably could have gotten mine there but started modding it, so I'll never really know.

The 05/06's have more benefits then just the better engine and looks, they have larger brakes, faster sliding seats etc. etc.

I just went 12.75 at 108 last weekend in our Auto '06 only mods being cold air, stock ported manifold, and a tune. They definetly respond better to mods for obvious reasons but you could do full exhaust, cold air, tune to an '04 and it would be a really nice car.

My 04 had M6, CAI, pacesetter LTs, catted X pipe, and flowmaster catback, Kumo tires, and I went 13.37 @109. Crappy 60' in the 2.xx. The LS1 is no slouch. I was faster than a few LS2 GTOs at Pitt Raceway. Could be the drivers too
