Hi. Names Will. Im new here, but not to these types of forums. I have had an 89 Firebird 2.8 V6 Standard shift Black on black since January after the Camaro got wrecked:candlesad. Anywho, I recently bought (just this week) a 1995 LT1 with 78k miles. It is a long block but it is bare. It has no intake, alt, starter, timing cover, oil pan, etc.. It did come with a brand new water pump and timing gears and chain. I just have no idea about newer engines and neither does anyone I race with. (There all old timers who race old school motors and such..lol) I am not sure what is compatable, what I can use off of my V6, bad ideas, good ideas.. Basically, I have no idea where to start! I dont want to go out and spend money on things that don't work or may be a bad idea. So please as much information or ideas would be appreciated, and I will try to do the same for you guys! Thanks!!

(Also I attached a pic of the motor on the stand. It started to get painted by the previous owner..)

Well welcome to the site!

To start out with I'd just try and get all the front accessories off of an LT1 b/c they'll clear and fit in the 3rd gens engine bay.

Besides that you'll need to determine if you want to go carb'd or stick with fuel injection, then you'll know what to do for a fuel system. The LT1 uses the same motor mounts as a Gen 1 so just get the ones out of a sbc powered 3rd gen and you should be good.

Any thoughts on what trans you'll be using?

Thank you! well I know I am going carbed so I won't have to deal with the computer. For right now I will have to leave the v6 clutch and trans in but use a V8 flywheel. I eventually want to switch it out to either a V8 T5 or T56. I don't remember If i said this but it is currently a T5.

Do you have the flywheel it came with? They are balanced in the back to balance the rotating assembly of the engine.

I'm pretty sure they all get the same weight in the same spot, so another flywheel should work as long as its for an LT1.

ok. Thank you. Also, Would an intake off of a norm 350 work on the LT1?

IIRC GM sells the intake to go carb with the LT1 or jegs,summit....... You should check out TGO many LT1 swaps in 3rd gens and alot of good info.

No. The LT1 has "reverse cooling", which routes the coolant through the heads first, then the block. The intake ports are in different locations than the Gen I SBC's.

You might want to consider finding the LT1 parts to complete it as an LT1 - intake, injectors, TB, harness, PCM, etc. Finding those parts used would probably cost you less than the conversion parts to carb, and would be, IMO, a better final product.
