I'm a newbie to this forum so bare with me. I have an LT1 out of a 95 Z-28 Camaro that I'm putting in a 1987 XJ6 Jaguar. The last time I worked on engines was back in the muscle car days, and of course things have changed and I've also forgotten a lot. I'm sure this forum will educate me and bring me up to date on the modern technology.
This engine has low mileage so all I'm going to do is clean it up, paint it, and put in new seals and gaskets. I now have it stripped down to a short block, but in tearing it down I failed to bring it to TDC and mark the position of the crankshaft pulley assembly. Now that I'm going to start putting it back together I need to know how to get there. If I were to line the dots on the camshaft and crankshaft up at the 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock position, and make sure the lifters on the #1 cylinder were down would this give me TDC? The pulley assembly is keyless so would I use the arrows stamped on them to line them up?
I'm sorry if I should a little confused on how to go about this but it's been a long time. I have a Haynes manual on this engine but it's worthless IMO. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
