stock pushrod lenght

what is the stock pushrod lenght on a lt1?

ok i found out my push rod lenght stock being 7.200, but some how i measured 7.430?? am i just stupid an need to remeasure or can somthing be wrong?

You measured the physical length of the stock pushrods?

yea with the pushrod lenght tool, maybe i did somthing wrong but their was a noticable gap between the rod an new rockers.. my lifters are in perfect shape so i know its not the lifters.

Well, did you do it with the springs on the valves? You prob depressed your lifter and got the larger reading...

i left the heads on an took the old rocker an push rods off, put in my new cam an put the lifters in an put the stock rods back in with the new rockers an their was a noticable differance. i called AI an they said i measured it wrong. am i missing somthing??? the reason i went this rout is because i need to tell AI what my lenght is so they can send me my chromoly push rods. then after i got the correct size i was gonna take the heads off an put my new springs on while im waiting for shipment, reason being so i can have less down time.

Ok so springs were still on when you turned over the engine by hand?

ok ya i did do that, i didnt realize i depressed the lifter... im still a newbe at this but im glad i asked cause i almost had them send me 7.450 push rods, that would of been bad juju. thanx alot for your help sho no i really apreciate it!

Yup, you either need to run a solid type lifter for the measuring part, or run a weak spring as to not depress the lifter.

Yea, well, you may need to make a solid lifter then.

ok i found out how to make a soild lifter, i need to take a lifter with the same diminions an take it apart. then i need to fill the lifter with washers so the spring or plunger thing doesnt move at all. or i can take weld the plunger inside the lifter so it doesnt move. i will do this tomorrow an then check my push rod lenght again.

That or take off the valve spring... may be easier.

i didnt know you get measeure accuratly with the spring off, shows how much of a newb i am but thanx again man!

No no, sorry, you take off the real valve spring and throw on like a weak spring so the lifter does not get depressed but you still have the correct geometry.

what what what!? solid lifter..weaker valve spring!? jibberish! What you've done is probably just miscounted the numbers of turns you put on and where you started out from. What pushrod length checker did you buy? I know the comp cams 5/16" pushrod length checker, every whole turn is .050" Find out what your minimum is and figure every turn to be .050 and calculate the number of turns it takes to get to the stock setting (7.200) and and check it there. Wipe off the valve tip and mark it w/ a permanent marker, apply your rocker and set the preload on the lifter, then turn the motor over twice. Inspect your wear pattern. If the wear pattern is more towards the manifold/header, then you need to shorten the pushrod. If the wear pattern is more towards the intake manifold, then you need to lengthen it. Always remark the surface between every check.

i was using the comp cam one like you have ckj. but i got it all figured out my length was 7.200. i did the same thing that you were talkin about ckj, i had found it on some comp cam page. but i greatly appreciate the help!
