My bro has been towing my car with his F350 Quad Cab Dually, 7.3 Turbo, NICE truck and never know the car is back there!
I hope to get my old 1971 Chevy Pick up set up to tow my car for the days when his truck is not available.

That's what I thought too. But they are 20's. It is the size of the truck.

I occasionally tow the chevelle to the track depending on what I am doing. All the other cars get driven to the track.
For towing I use my 79 Chevrolet 1 ton with 454/400 turbo combo and 3.73 gears. It tows beautiful for me and gets the job done just fine. Larry.
98 Kenworth T-800, Cat N13 w/ 9 speed eaton fuller, and a 2002 35ton witzco challenger trailer  well, not really, but i did move a 65 Galaxie 500 today on it

I normally drive my car to the track.
Those times I've gone out of town, it's been towed by a '97 Chevy 1500 with Vortec 5.7 (fellow racer's regular tow vehicle), an '84 Chevy G20 van with Goodwrench 350 replacement engine (what we regularly use to tow the horse trailer), and a 2002 Chevy-chassis 31' motor home with the 496 engine.
Interestingly, the motor home got as good of fuel mileage as our van. While being able to cruise and pull up hills faster. . .

well, normally i drive the focus to the track but i might trailer the beast once in a while...haha, ya right. Im actually planning to get a higher mileage ls1 once i pay off the focus this summer so I can gear it up and spray it for some fun. Ill always drive my car to the track though, never have been a fan of trailers

Haven't you ever broken anything at the track. My guess is you'll start liking trailers when that happens,,,lol. Here is my tow rig. A 79 1 ton single axle with 454/400 turbo combination, running 3.73 gears. Bought this truck out in Battle Ground, Washington and drove it all the way back to Cincinnati 2,600 miles. Rust free with original paint. Runs awsome and pulls my enclosed trailer without complaints. I have a few bolt on goodies and performance upgrades done to it,,,,and it's been known to be unhooked from the trailer and go a few rounds at the track as well  Larry.

Nice .. it needs a leveling kit in the worst way
Firebirdjones
01-18-2007, 10:34 AM
You must be kidding,,,,no way would that truck get lowered. That would just ruin a perfectly good truck
CamTom12
01-18-2007, 07:28 PM
nah, he means leveled front and rear.. I bet that would hurt towing though
Firebirdjones
01-18-2007, 09:18 PM
Oh okay,,,LOL. Ya I don't really want to lower the rear either, by the time you get the trailer loaded and anything in the back you might need as well, it pretty much levels out and rides real nice. Load levelers also help as well.
Thats what the truck was built for.
If I lowered the back to sit level and then had all that tongue weight with trailer, car, tools, generator, etc....then the front end would be up in the air, front tires unloaded,,,not very safe to tow that way, especially when it's raining,,,don't ask me how I know that. Larry.

Actually now that I look at the picture a little, I think the rake is a little exaggerated. My drive way angles down towards the garage slightly, giving the appearance that the truck has a severe rake,,,,it's really not that much on level ground. I would say maybe 2 inches difference front to rear. It's just the way the factory built them. Larry.

Just bought a '95 2WD C/K2500 6.5 turbo diesel. Going to sell the van. The truck will mostly be a horse hauler, but if I make it to an out-of-town race again, it'll get the duty most likely.

If I need to tow the car I will talk my dad into taking me with this http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i244/96ta/Truck.jpg, or I'll steal his 2000 Silverado 2500 6.0:werd:.

What good is anywhere towing from AAA if you never get to use it?

Thats why I don't have AAA, never needed it and saves me money. :D

100 a year for unlimited towing, I think that's a lot less then the cost of a truck, trailer, gas, maintenance. But, your way is more convenient :D
Firebirdjones
01-19-2007, 04:23 PM
LOL, actually everyone needs a truck so the cost of that doesn't count. I would have a truck anyway even if I didn't tow.
The cost of the trailer,,,well thats debatable. I use the trailer for so much more than just bailing my car out of a sticky situation. It's also for long distance hauling, keeps us dry when it's raining, keeps everything locked up when I am not around so you have the security as well. It also pulls double duty to haul other things as well for the house etc, so it has more than paid for itself over the years....
The gas theory doesn't really jive with me though, my old truck actually does better on gas than my fathers 2001 6.0 LQ4 3/4 ton. I get 15 mpg without towing, and about 11-12 towing.
Dad is only getting 12-13 mpg without towing and he has overdrive too! I have him beat with my old school carbed, non overdrive, 30 year old truck :P
Besides my truck sits in the garage 90% of the time and only comes out when I need it,,,so the gas in the tank has a better chance of going stale before I burn it all
But ya, there is the cost of maintainance, oil changes and tune ups, tires etc. you got me there..but geewiz, I own so many cars whats one more to maintain.
I know it sounds like I am trying to justify having all this junk,,,,but it's fun to play with  Larry.
