My buddy just bought a 86 trans am with the 305 in it. He wants to know what kind of tranny he has in it. it's a 5 speed. I thought i would ask you guys and see if you guys knew.

should be a tremec t-5 or a borg warner t-5

ok to find out just look on the tranny? or is there another way to find out?

im sure the is some serial numbers on the trans case that you can use to identify the trans.

If stock, it's a "non-World Class" T5.

You might find a tag with the model number on it; if so, a 305 should have 1352-150, 1352-157, or 1352-158 (if it is the stock '86 transmission). To know for sure, you have to pull the tranny and look at the front face. The countershaft bearing is indented on the World Class transmissions, and flat on the non-WC transmissions.

The first design was rated at 280 lb-ft, the WC at 300 lb-ft. That's not the torque they can take without breaking, but the constant torque they can withstand for 24 straight hours.
