Cheersandgears.com is reporting as follows:

from Josh @ Cheers & Gears (http://www.cheersandgears.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4774)

With the introduction of the Camaro concept courtesy of Chevrolet and General Motors Mr. Lutz stuck around to answer some questions from media folk and automotive enthusiasts alike. Below are notes taken by yours truly.

- Mr. Lutz noted that the Camaro would need to sell about 165,000 vehicles for it to be profitable and justifiable for the company.

- The Camaro concept rides on a platform that is currently being used and is GM?s new global rear-wheel drive architecture.

- Mr. Lutz did not state if the Camaro could be made outside of Canada, or if the vehicle would have to be made within the Canadian borders which could still mean a hold-up with the CAW regarding the Camaro nameplate.

- Bankruptcy talks were dismissed as quickly as they were brought up as I knew they would be.

- One final note and one that fans of the Camaro will want to pay attention to: GM could make a decision on production in just a FEW SHORT MONTHS. Mr. Lutz cited the Solstice as an example explaining that from the moment the Solstice was a concept to just three months after a decision was made on production.

That being said, for every individual that is out there reading this, BE SURE TO LET GM KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS! You can do so here as they will certainly be read by those that need to read them. Once again, a decision on production could be made in just a few short months, so now is the time to let your voices be heard.

165,000 vehicles?!? WTF?? 4th gens sold well under 100,000 combined.

Then how do they make SSR's and Solstices profitable and justifible. Sounds to me like Lutz is preparing the public with excuses for why they can't make a niche segment vehicle, meanwhile they keep coming out with niche vehicles other then Camaro.

I'm getting a worse and worse feeling about this....

Looking more at that 165,000 number.

Trying to find sales numbers online is needle and haystack. But for example.

in 2001 cars that sold more then 165,000 units
Chevy Cavalier 233,000
Chevy Impala 208,000
Chevy Malibu 176,000
All 3 popular rental cars

Buick had 0 cars sell that many
Pontiac Grand Am sold 182,000
Chevy Silverado did 716,000
Chevy Yukon did 202,000
Caddilac had nothing close.

So for the Camaro to come back Lutz is saying it would have to be a top 5 car brand of all it's divisions.

I think he's just posturing...the whole point of sharing the platform with other cars was supposed to be that each one could be lower volume but still make money.

If they'll price and option it right it will appeal to a large consumer group. The ball is in their court there.

i can see the camaro selling pretty darn good, but not 165,000 good. the camaro is a really good image vehicle for GM as well. a common mans corvette, and something to counter Ford and Cryslers new offerings in the pony car segment

Yeah except that was more like 3 and a half years. The 69 camaro ran all the way into 1970 because the second gen wasn't ready yet.

even then, if you figure it got 699,000 in 3.5 years, thats 199,714 a year

hopefully it's 165k cars on that PLATFORM. that woudl defintally make a little bit more sense in it being doable.

On a car that was priced to be the cavalier of its time. GM will not price the car low enough to capture the market the first gen had which was young first time new car buyers.
