On a stock rear with an M6 I wouldn't go taller than a 26" tire. A4's can get away with a 28" boot.
Either way a 15" rim will provide the best bite for traction.

I think that's an ET Drag size.
I run 26X10.5/15 ET Streets. The are comparable to a 255/60 tire.

Taller tires are as important as wider. You could go with a 28x11.50 ET Street so long as you gear the car accordingly.

Depends how high your car traps I guess but with 28s I am sure you could run at least 4.10 gears with 28s.
If you are going to leave the 3.42s, run the short tire to keep some gear in the car.

Like Trevor said, I'd go with a 26x10.5x15" tire. With the 3.42's that'll give you some decent bite.
