Odometer Question

Before I even ask this question I want to say that my motive is not illegal or dishonest in nature.

I was able to pick up a 150mph cluster for my T/A (came with the 120mph) and I want to swap it in. My question is regarding the difference in the odometers. My car has about 106k on it and the new cluster has 132k on the odometer. Is there a way to spin back the new cluster to match the one in my car now?

I know that question sounds really bad, but my NYS inspection actually prevents me from doing anything illegal (even if I wanted to which I don't) because my mileage is recorded at every inspection, so if I came in with 80k on the odometer next summer I'd be in trouble. So like I said above all I want to do is match the current reading on my odometer so that I don't have to wait until my car has 132k to swap it in (at about 2k a year it would be quite a while), is there any way to do this?

Your best 100% bet is to remove the old wheel assembly and put it in your new one. Since your new cluster has more mileage than your old cluster you'd have to trip it all the way over. It can easily be done.

Well I got the new gauge cluster and swapped the odometers, it was pretty easy, thanks again for the help.

My next question is regarding the needles. The speedo, tach, and fuel needles are faded on the new cluster and I had thought about attempting to swap them with the ones from my original cluster that look like new.

Can this be done w/o messing anything up severely or reinventing the wheel? If so, how?

It doesn't bother me that much, I'd rather stick with the faded needles than mess anything up but I figured I'd ask just in case it could be done simply. Thanks.

From what I understand when you pull the needles off it takes an act of congress to get it lined up back right again. I havn't done it nor have really talked to anybody that has. But people used to pull the needles off on the overlays and used to have a lot of trouble getting the needles back right in the right position. I personally wouldn't do it.

I kinda figured it would be a PITA getting the needles back on alignment-wise. Thanks for confirming this. I'd rather have accurate gauges than perfect appearing ones. Thanks again.

but have you thought of applying some new paint?
Maybe one of those bottles of paint used by folks who build model cars and airplanes.
That and a little brush might fix you right up.

I had thought of that but wasn't sure if the paint would keep the needle from illuminating with the lights on driving after dark. But I'll look into it to see if I can find some kind of translucent paint or somthing. Thanks.
