Hey everyone, this is my first post, and yes i am a newbe. Here it goes, I have a 65 chevy truck with a 283, new, world heads with a 58cc chamber, new cam .214/.214 duration, new lifters, pushrods, summit stage 1 intake and headers. I have a 600cfm performer 1406. It seemed to be running rich so i put a .095 main jet and a .092 secondary with a orange 5" step up spring with a 75 x 47 metering rod. I'm having a problem with my engine stumbling just past idle, basicly when i give it throttle crusing about 40 mph i get a stumble and even a miss and a back fire out of the carb somtimes. I checked my timing its at 10 btdc and my vac is at 15 hg at idle. I can't find a vacuum leak and i adjusted my choke according to the manuel. What's next????

Welcome aboard.
I can't tell you what to pull out of a tuning kit (I'm not that familiar with nor much of a fan of Performer carbs), but you need to get the primary rods moving out of the jets sooner. If everything else is okay, just put in stronger springs. No clue which ones those are, but that's the ticket. A little more timing would probably help as well.
I assume you have gone through the tuning instructions that came with the carb or are available on Edelbrock's website.

Five7kid, thanks for the info. I'm starting to not be a fan of performer carbs my self!! I read about tuning in the manule, and I also read in other forums that it sounds like what my carb is doing has to do with a lean condition, basiclly not enough fuel into the idle to accelerator transsision. I'll put a stronger step up spring witch sould be a 7" pink spring and also the book says to move the pump linkage to the closest hole to the carb body for more pump stroke. Does that make sense in regards to getting the rods moving??

Yes, that sounds like the right thing to do. It definitely sounds like it's got a lean spot. You might have to go richer on the main circuit.

I also don't have much expirience with these carbs, but I had a simialar situation happen to me on a 2bbl dodge, it ended up being that the accelerator pump needed adjustment.

Ok, I changed to a stronger step up spring 7" pink, and moved my pump linkage to the closest hole next to the carb body for more stoke. I'm going to go test drive it now
I'll let you know what happens!!

Yup, that seemed to do it. I advanced the timing to 12btdc as well as what I did above! Thanks for the help, now I can peel the back tires off!!!:D
