Steering question

I just bought a 87 trans am 305 auto. and the steering column is loose. when the wheel is locked in place, it can be moved in all directions. how do i fix that?

The steering column probly needs to be pulled apart and either rebuilt or have the screws tightened (with some lock thread). I might be lazy, but, I'd just get one from a junk yard.

Sounds like the tilt pivot mounts are loose. Pretty common, you have to remove the steering wheel and have Torx sockets to tighten it back up. Not technically difficult, but it is a bit of a headache to get to. No so much that I'd get a different column, though.
