View Full Version : Question Another "picking a cam for me" thread
SlowAss94LT1 08-11-2008, 09:44 AM I need some help picking a cam. I want something that is going to work with ported heads and long tube headers. I really want a cam that sounds nasty as hell at idle, but will work with just ported heads. I am not going to put bigger valves in them. Does anyone have any tips on how to achieve this?
I was thinking about the cc503 with a 110lsa. However, I want the gm847 / xfi292 idle.
Any info would be GREAT!
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 09:46 AM So you want a cam that will make a lot of noise at idle and then what?

make a lot of noise at idle and then run within 6300rpm and work perfectly with ported heads, 58mm TB, and long tubes..... I'm looking for 360-400rwhp....
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 10:00 AM Noise does not equal power. If you want noise run a dump after your y pipe. Its loud.
SlowAss94LT1 08-11-2008, 10:16 AM I want extremely choppy lopey idle.... I already have noise (SLP headers, Y-pipe, & catback)
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 10:26 AM Did you look at the vids I sent you? Mine has a choppy idle, and is real loud when you get on it.
StealthFormula 08-11-2008, 10:28 AM Are emissions a concern?
Keeping within 6300rpm with ported heads is going to make out for a cam <cc503 territory. I would contact Bret Bauer and have him make you a custom grind that duration/lift wise would keep you within your rpm range but at the same time have the right lsa so that it sounds pretty nasty. In terms of off-the shelf I really think the cc503 may be too much because that cam likes to hit 6300-6400 with unported stock heads so with ported it would want to be pushed a little further. It would work pretty well but the most potential may not be seen until like 6500 or so shiftpoints I would think, depending on the amount of work done to the heads of course. The cc503 sounds pretty choppy but everything smaller than it off-the shelf wise sounds pretty tame but the sound doesn't equal usable power and whatnot. I think the best way to go would be to have Bret set you up with something that suits your wants and needs and I'm sure you would be quite happy.
SlowAss94LT1 08-11-2008, 10:32 AM Right now the heads are stock.... I was possibly going to take them off and have them ported this winter. I'm not sure. I may throw a little nitrous at it too and I heard that the cc503 loves the N20.
I think the cc503 with a custom ground lsa would be fine for me. Can I have comp cams grind any lsa I want?

Yea you could do that, I heard a cc503 on a 110 once and it sounded real nice. If the heads wont be ported then defintely go with the cc503 and if your going to have them ported I would suggest maybe not limiting yourself to 6300, maybe bump it up to 6400 or so and I think that would be fine. You never know tho, 6300 could be the sweet point all depends on the setup and how the heads will be done.
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 10:40 AM Or just rebuild the entire motor, that way you can have your choppy idle and still actually make power.

Would it be stupid to go 108lsa? Possible? I know it will give me more idle, but what about performance?
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 10:49 AM You laugh, but I would start saving up for it if you plan on spinning it past 6200.

I planned on having the rev limiter set at 6200....
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 11:06 AM And my cam is 107 LSA.

ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 12:33 PM Still don't see the point in doing all that to pull the heads later on and repeat the process.....

Maybe I'll just leave the heads stock.... You have to realize you have to stop somewhere before it becomes too much. There is someone out there that will always be faster... You know what its all about? $$$.... whoever has the most can have the fastest car. Some of us just have to stop somewhere and be happy with what they have. I've always wanted a car that had a monster mean cam in it. This is a way that I make it possible, have fun, and be decently quick.... and I'm happy...
I'll be happy once my car goes "bl blump bl blump bl blump" instead of bl bl bl bl bl bl bl"
ITS ALL ABOUT THE BLUMP!
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 12:53 PM Save your money and do it all at once, like me! Three grand later I have a beastly car that goes blump and fastttttt. But cammed only cars should not be disregarded to lightly. My only concern is that you seem set on camming it now, and then pulling it apart soon after to port heads... To me, thats not very economical but to each his own.

What do you mean? Just simply makin' the right decision to go with Bret?
I'm a little concerned about the tuning after a custom grind though. I have heard that it is easier to tune for an off the shelf cam.... I just want my car to run right.
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 12:56 PM You did say you want a choppy idle, that comes with some great idling.
SStrokerAce 08-11-2008, 01:01 PM It's simple to get the tune right.... just call up Ed Wright and he can send you something close to start from and then tweak it from there.
ShowNoMercy 08-11-2008, 01:09 PM How can one contact him?

Yea...I talked to Bryan Herter at PCMforless and he was saying how many Lloyd Elliot packages he has done so I felt confident leaving my tuning up to him. The car runs great with his mailorder and Im running one of Bret's cams that Lloyd use to offer.
