I have a '96 Caprice LT1 that is getting ready to be tuned by pcmforless and I need to know what the stock rear end ratio is. Also, anybody had pcmforless do a tune on a stock engine and noticed any changes? Thanks for the help!

2.56, stock (GM8), 2.93 tow package (GW9), and 3.08 9c1 or impala ss (GU4). The spid lable in the trunk will tell the story.

Stock rear end ratio......I have a '96 Caprice LT1.....
If they have the stock gears in them, then you have 3.08 gears.
BTW......not all 9C1's have the 3.08 gears!!!
A 9C1 with the 4.3 engine has 3.23 gears.

Thats true, but if it's a Civi Caprice SEDAN with an LT1(aka, the towing package), it has 2.93's. I also think the 4.3L Sedan's had 2.93's a well, but with the 7.5" rear. On a Wagon, 2.56's were standard, unless it had the towing package, then it got 2.93's.

Do you think 3.23 would be good gears on a 96 impala ss or go with 3.73

3.23 gears are barely noticeable.....been there, done that .
3.42 gears are a bit more noticeable and is actually a worthy upgrade.....been there, done that ;).
3.73 gears are generally considered to be the 'best' gear for a performance oriented daily driver.......been there, DOING that in my 9C1 !
4.10 gears with the auto tranny and you start to get into the 'all-out' racing mode......been there, DOING that with the SS    .....Woo-Hoo!!!!!
FWIW, of course.......just one man's opinion!

if you have 3.08s, then go up to 3.73s or steeper, or don't waste your money.

I would replace the posi while you are at it. They are not known for lasting a long time. My DCM roadmaster has 80k on it, and the stock posi is showing it's age already.
I went with 4.10's, and an Eaton in my Caprice. Love it... I'm doing the same to the Roadmaster.
This is the cheapest place I have found for all the parts. Also note, that if you change the ratio, you will need to get a special ABS reluctor for the ratio, or else the ABS system won't work.

labor to install it should run about $200-$300, unless you have the means to do it yourself. wouldn't suggest it unless you like taking on a tricky job, and have all the right tools. I did mine, but I was missing a few key tools, and that made it a BITCH to do.
