Hey everyone. I have the opportunity to get a 89 trans am in decent condition with a next to new 350 engine (L51 aka Vortec 5700) with only 19k on it, with a 350 turbo trans for a great price. Its got a few spots on the body that need to be painted and needs some interior work, but nothing I can't handle.

BUT, the speedometer doesn't work. The guy said the cable for the speedo cable didn't reach the gauge where it plugs into. This car also has a 373 posi rear end.

My question is: Where can I go about getting a cable that'll reach from the trans to the gauge cluster, and will compensate for the speed change in the 373 gears.

Hopefully someone here can help, this is the one thing that's preventing me from buying the car. Thanks :]

Interesting. As far as I know, 89 Trans Ams had electronic speedos. No speedo cable. Just a vss on the tranny.

TH350 is the problem. They didn't come with VSS on the tranny.

You can get a VSS box from Summit or the like that will connect to the speedometer cable drive on the tranny and wire that into the car. But, I'm not sure I'd want to take on a kluged project like this.

For the record, the Vortec is called "L31".

Not that I need to say this, but five7kid knows what he is talking about. He might not remember, but he helped me with a few years a couple years ago. Thank you :))

Oh and here is a page that Dak. Digi told a guy to check out having to do with TH350 and new truck engines.

Not to be an ass....but you really need a speedo? TH350 w/ 3.73 is EZ to guestimate speed. You will always drive under the limit while cruising......or were you concerned with inspection reasons?
