It looks nice, but I never thought I'd see the day that a Camaro outweighed my 2nd gen, by some 300 pounds, with an all aluminum engine on top of that...

Thank Uncle Sam, they have weight restrictions on V8's now.

I haven't heard that before. You have a source for that?

I think its just that safety regs have forced vehicles up in weight. I'm talking not only crash standards forcing beefier chassis but things like ABS, full curtain air bags, tire pressure monitoring, and even stability control are becoming required equipment.

The important thing to remember is that its over 200 lbs lighter than the challenger, and its right there with the Mustang.

I'm trying to find it. Was in one of the online auto mags. That's why the Viper is such a pig and they added like 400# on the weight of the Vette.

Who added 400 lbs to the Vette? The C6 is LIGHTER than the C5. The only reason the Z06 is heavier than the base coupe is all the performance upgrades. Same for the ZR1..the blower and intercooler stuff ads weight.

It had to do with the proposed changes in the CAFE standards to a weight-based system. If I remember there was a significant jump at around 3200 pounds. Plus GM worked closely with Holden to develop the 5th Gen Camaro and Australia already has a weight to hp restriction on their cars.

Ok well I couldn't find the original article but this is the formula the NHTSA developed for a weight-based CAFE standard. As you can see MPG requirement reduces significantly from 3000 to 5000 lbs. At the time GM was first developing the zeta platform there was a big push to adopt this standard. As you know the zeta was an on again, off again thing several times, much of it due to speculation over CAFE.

But did that actually make it into the new CAFE law or is that just a proposal? It is unclear in the link you provided.

No, not yet. It was just proposed at the request of Congress. But GM was freaking out over it. Once you spend millions on the development of a new platform they wern't going to just dump it and start over. They were just going to dump it all together and changed their mind twice. I'm sure you remember the original dates were somewhere around 06 for the initial rollout. Now we are looking at 09. Supposedly Australia will see them first.
