I am posting for a friend of mine. He has a 1996 Impala SS. He has no power to the dash. Nothing works except for speedo. Just curious if this is common and if it is where do I start looking. Where is the temp sensor located that sends signal to the dash. I have not checked one thing as of yet but will next weekend. Car is stock with no aftermarket anything. Thanks in advance for your replies and comments.
Start simple...check some fuses. They're is gauge fuse for 4th gens, i'm not sure about B-bodies though.

Well his car just completely died while he was driving it. No power anywhere except for the light under the hood. Im thinking fuseable links or bad ground. He said that the car died after hitting a bump. Its like the car has no battery in it. I was thinking the fuseable links becuase the starter and solenoid is the power path. Without power being able to pass through the starter and solenoid it would give this same type of problem. Am I on the right track? Thanks

You can test voltage through the fusable link with a multimeter. Start there and work your way forward. Could be as simple as a loose connection at the starter or alternator.

I got to lookin under the hood and noticed a bunch of back yard mechanic wiring. Most of it was burnt and wired very unprofessionally. Next to find out why no dash power.
