camarogirl 05-09-2008, 11:44 PM I have a 93 Lt1 I was told its got 3.73 gears in it but not sure we are gonna check it this weekend .if it doesnt I have a rearend out of an SS with 3.42's my question is if my car only has 2.73's in it would it be a good idea to put the 3.42's in it and what would it do for my car.
mrcadillac 05-10-2008, 01:41 AM If it has 2.73's, and you go to 3.42, 3.73, or 4.10's the car will feel alot faster off the line, since you are multipling the torque seen at the wheels, and you also get into your powerband sooner(3000-6000 rpms).

camarogirl 05-13-2008, 12:56 AM what about top end will it kill it any?I'm looking for more top end.
Scott Anderson 05-13-2008, 01:19 AM I went from 2.73s to 3.42s. It was a nice gain in "power." Went from being a car or two behind my brothers formula to 2 cars ahead with gears and a tune.
mtperformance 05-13-2008, 01:43 AM what about top end will it kill it any?I'm looking for more top end.
Do you mean top end as in RPM or top speed?
mrcadillac 05-13-2008, 02:00 AM wth 3.73's and an auto you can still see over 150mph
DJ_Kovacs 05-13-2008, 09:37 AM If you want nothing but top end speed, you will need a numerically LOWER gear ratio, however, your acceleration will get worse. Think of trying to speed up on a mountain bike on the hardest gear, great top end, but no acceleration.
If you have an A4, go with 3:73's, you wont drop top speed by much, but will have killer acceleration.
Why do you need to go much faster then 150+ anyways?
94 Z28 w/issues 05-13-2008, 04:09 PM i have 3.73's and i love them
camarogirl 05-16-2008, 01:03 AM well cause I raced my friends 2002 SLP SS we stood toe to toe all the way till the end I'm looking for the extra push and I have the set of gears out of an SS and I didnt want to hurt my car any wanted it to stay hanging with the LS cars or bump up a lil.
Scott Anderson 05-16-2008, 01:39 AM :rolleyes:You definitely need to top out cars in a race all the time. That's totally safe. Hope you like jail time.
Now, yes. I can say that I've been that fast. I've even been that fast racing (on a bike no less), but to say that you want purely topend for racing to the brink, that's idiocracy.
camarogirl 05-16-2008, 01:55 AM Last time I checked you dont get jail time at the track. I was told gears kill top end and I was just wondering if it was true cause I know the LS cars are top end cars and I was trying to make sure I wasn't going to kill mine buy making the change.since I can hang with my buddy's car I didn't want to set mine back.Since you've been there dont criticize me for something you also have done.

What do you have done to the car right now and what does the SS got ?
mrcadillac 05-16-2008, 05:45 AM if your drag racing, definatly do the gears, they will shave about .1-.3 off your times. depending on what ratio you are starting with, and what you go to. You will never have the top end pull and LS motor has, unless you make a few motor changes. the biggest would be to add a bigger cam.
DJ_Kovacs 05-16-2008, 09:11 AM The reason LS cars are faster is not because of gearing, it is because of one thing, more power. If you want to beat a ls motor, your going to need more then gears
sleepyTA 05-16-2008, 02:52 PM What mods have you done to your car. Motor wise I mean. A higher stall converter will help you get off the line a little faster, it won't do anything up top though.

Gears will get you out of the hole faster and not kill your top end. They will get you into the higher rpms quicker actually say if you did a roll race or just stomped it down the highway.
If you're doing your racing at a track you should opt for the 3.73s in your auto. I have 3.73s and see about 2500rpms @ 70 I believe(can't quite recall).
If you can hang with your buddys car right now, you will be faster than your buddys car with the installation of 3.73s. End of story.
94FormulaBird 05-17-2008, 01:04 AM the gears will take some top speed off....nothing noticable tho....my buddy has a 86 vette with a 383 and bout to boost it...hes keepin the 3.42s in it to make sure he can hit 200 mph in the standing mile
