View Full Version : Stumble through RPMs
Ok this week has definatly not been my week to fool with cars. I put on my powerslot rotors and hawk pads and go out driving. Pick up the g/f and come back to my house and the power steering is going out of it. Great...I need a pump because it never leaks fluid. Get back to the house, pop the hood and there's power steering fluid all over my pretty motor  The belt had cut a grove into what I guess to be the return line from the steering column/rack and pinion. So...I start to replace it on Sun, get the old one off, grab the one off of my 93 TA and put on it. I went ahead and drained out as much fluid as possible to put some fresh in so I kept this 1' tall black plastic bucket underneath the car to catch the excess. I put everything back together, fill it up, start the car and back it off the ramps and turn the wheel back and forth back and forth. So...what did I forget to do? I forgot to take the freakin bucket from under the car. I didnt' notice it untill I drove 200' from my garage and out into the main road. So I back up and out comes the bucket, its all mangled up and all the oil is on the ground and my car is all of a sudden running rough. I have checked EVERYTHING that I can possible check w/out getting elbow deep into checking stuff. It favored more towards the drivers side. I hooked up Datamaster and read the O2's, they seem to be fluxuating good and not throwing any SES lights. I checked all plug wires on both the plugs, opti, checked knock sensor, checked PCM grounds, checked coil, checked coolant temp sensor on water pump, opti for cracks, connections on the O2's. I don't see any wires stripped/pulled/stressed on the O2 harnesses but thats what i'm leaning towards. I didn't get to put my hands on the connection on the O2 harness and the extension on the drivers side due to it being hot back there. Anybody got any suggestions? The O2's look to be in good shape and like I said are fluxuating on Datamaster...
The car has this serious power robbing stumble at 2K+ I can't figure out what this plastic mangled bucket can destroy that'll cause that a much of a power rob... anybody got any suggestion....cause i am at a loss here:dontknow:

wow man, im not sure, is there any sensors up front there in that spot that the bucket would have hit, and you said PS fluid was all over the place, is it possible it got into the opti

The fluid really was all over the place... wonder if that little puff of smoke you saw on the drivers side is somehow related???

Check your tempature sensors, i know if unplugged it can cause a lot of trouble.
Any chance you pulled some of that fluid up into your intake and it got on the MAF? Try unplugging it and see how she runs with the SES light on.
Also do the same with the 02 sensors, unplug them and see how she runs.
Let the car idel a little while while it lears that the 02's or MAF are not working. YOu migh have to keep your foot on the gas for a minute or 2 untill the computer switchs over into air density mode.
And well OPTI, did some of that fluid get into it and screw stuff up...PITFA but you might have to pull the cap and see what it looks like in their.

Errrr you got fluid all over your motor and did not clean the IAC after ? hmmmmmmmm...
I mean its not like doused w/ fluid, its just spots... about pin drops all over it. The opti has been sealed w/ RTV and ran fine after I swapped hoses..it was just untill I backed up..weirdest damn thing.. I mean this thing has a solid miss to it and its horrible...
I've checked all the connections and visually looked at all the wiring on every pigtail, i mean unplugging and actually seeing if anything has been stretched, pulled, etc. I've gotten so many header burn marks on my arms its scary
I'll try pulling the MAF wire and the O2's, i'll also go ahead and check to circuitry on the O2's to verify that they've got a good solid connection w/ my voltmeter :)
I have a blue point digital voltmeter that has this resistance measurer on it, and whenever you touch the two leads together and has 0 resistance it makes a beeping noise. I'll just probe the wire on the engine harness to the wire at the base of the O2 and see if I get my little beepy beep. That little feature comes very in hand when searching for a wire far away and you have a couple of the same colored wires.

i got to really nice volt meter and only know how to check voltage with it...Maybe one day ill download the manual and learn how to use it, i bet it would been handy in doing the 97 conputer into 93 car swap
I love a dvm :) anybody that fools w/ wires/cars should definatly have 1 or 2
And thanks for the help everyone..don't want anybody to think their help/time isn't appreciated.

Chris if it's a dead miss it probably has something to do with the opti. You could have just pulled a plug wire out a little(maybe but not likely). I hate opti's, Mine went out all of a sudden like that, I think I changed plugs and started it up and it had a dead miss off of idle, ended up being the opti. I hate em, and you've had more problems with them than I have.
I checked the wires on the opti a little...I didn't pull every single one out and listen for the click when re-installing. I'm going to pull every plug wire off and try re-installing tomorrow. When I fool with the car I always start it up and run it to see if it made a difference but i always just end up doing nothing but burning myself  It idles fine (I guess..my car has 30 different idle sounds it seems) its just 2500+ its a dead miss.
This sucks big time...freakin bucket...glad it got mangled after doing this crap

You could still give it the OObuckshot treatment to make you feel a little better:lol:
I'll give it the treatment all right... thinking about the first 7K and sold treatment, but that wouldn't even buy the motor in the car...wow...thats a lotta dough in this freakin car that was supposed to be a "cam only DD"

Did it crack the cap?
That was one of my guesses, but when you look at it the opti is mighty damn covered up by the water pump/balancer. I've been working ~2.5 more hours everyday and the car keeps getting bumped back due to sleep :)
I'm guessing eventually when i do work on it what i'll do is check stuff in this order.
Plug wires & cracked plugs
Wires for the O2 sensors
Triple check all harnesses again
Pull the opti and pull it down for inspection. I've wanted to loctite the rotor bolts anyway.
I've got 23 days to get this taken care of and cleaned back up for the local car show... power steering still resides all over my motor...:(

We'll get her straight in time for the show ;)
If not I just got done w/ my college courses and i can come down and clean on it while your at work since i'm such a wonderful g/f
Fixed it for you  -CKJ-
