hey guys and girls, the mods on the roadsmasher are going well, so far. I've heard people saying bad things about the hypertech programmers, and was wondering why. I hear lots of good things about pcmforless.com, but, especially being in canada, I think that would put my car out of commission for too long.(if I have to send my pcm there and back) I like the sound of being able to re-flash the pcm myself in the future, and the car isn't out of commission in the meantime. Opinions???(by the way, mr cadillac, thanks on the link for the tach install,I went and bought and installed one......super cool!!!)

the hypertech might give you 5hp, and 5lbs torque, but the PCMforless will give you 10hp, and 10lbs torque, so to speak. check this out. www.ws6.com (http://www.ws6.com), and go to the hypertech vs shop program section. It won't load on my computer, maybe it will load on yours. They saw a MPG inprovement over the Hypercrap, throttle responce improvment, and a big gain in midrange torque.

Basically, why pay $300 for a programer that gets you halfway there, when you can get a custom tune for $200 that gets you better results. PCMforLess offers a program, where you order a PCM, tuned, then you send back your stocker. OR, you can buy a tuning cable from AKMcables.com, hook it to your laptop/ desktop(if you get it close enough, or get a cable long enough), then they email you a program(or send it on a disc) for about $100, and you load it yourself. If you go the tuning cable/laptop route, you can then buy tuner cats for about $100, and do all your own tweaks. Alter shift points, redline, tire size, gear ratio, timing tables, trans pressure tables and many many more advanced bits. Plus, you then have a tool you can use to monitor your car in realtime, and look for errors, and problems. You use a program called datamaster which you can get free. You can take "datalogs" save them, have other people look at them, and help you find problems, or send the datalogs to PCMforless to have them get the tune even closer.

If I get another PCMtune, I will have it done by Madz28.com. After all the guys I have talked to, they said there Madz28 tune made the car run better, and faster than PCMforless, when doing a mail order tune. My only beef with MadZ28 is they VIN lock there programs, so I couldn't put it in a spare PCM.

I've got a cable, new powerful laptop(reason I bought it), Tuner cats, datamaster, and some other free programs, just so I can do some tuning, and alters.

Also, if you do some hunting, you can find guys who wrote there own tunes, and you can load that for pretty much whatever the tunning supplies cost.

I really appreciate the input. perhaps I'll look further into the shop tunes. My laptop (or brainpower, for that matter) probably won't be up to doing the tuning myself....the gas mileage improvement sounds good too...if I can keep my foot out of it long enough

Thanks again!!!!

a buddy of mine was using a laptop with 266 megahertz. thats .266 Gigahertz. It worked absolutly great. he used it on my car a couple of times. it took a lil longer than a faster computer, but it got the job done, and it was reliable since he didn't use it to get on the internet. Check around for the guys who do load it youself programs.

There's:
Ed Wright
Bryan Herter - pcmforless.com
Alex - PCM performance.com
MadZ28.com
trifectica performance

I know trifectica offers a hand held tuner, like a black berry, or a palm pilot. You load it, then ship it back them them. Still likely cheaper than the hypercrap. But being in Canada does pose a few limitations

well that gives me more to look into. whatever you said about giga.....mega.....schmirtz.....no idea what that is. yes, I'm a troglodyte with computers, that's why I don't wanna mess with it myself. that's also why they won't let me on buickforums. I guess I have the wrong kind of email? didn't know there was more than one....

lol, issues on buick forums? What is the service you use for email? I use AOL. You can get an AOL account without paying for it. Because its the Same as AIM(AOL Instant Messanger). If I load AIM, my email pops up, and I don't even have the AOL explorer loaded on my computer. I just setup 2 new AOL accounts for different reasons about spam, and sign up offers, ebay's BS emails, etc.

PM me your Email address, and Iwill see if one of the guys can over ride it. I'm good friends with one of the Admins. When I met him and his roady, It was the reason I bought one. Good Ol Buffman. :D

Gigahertz is the processor speed. Most computers today have speeds of about 1.5-3.0 Gigahertz.(sometimes a dual processor, basically like have 2 ladys on there own type writer. instead of just one very fast typing lady, you have two.) A pentium II is about 266 megahertz, if you can remember back that far.
