I just helped a Friend take a 305 out of his S10 blazer the motor rod knocks, and he Is giving me the heads for free..It ran strong before we took it apart, Just had a bottom end knock soo bad... Is it worth taking the heads and have work done to them, or are they good for Being a Fishing boat anchor?...its a 1990 305 was carborated..Hey they are free

Need the casting #'s. Could be good stuff, could be door stops.

I like the way you put that.

IMO the 305 heads are almost certainly not worth wasting money on. Even if they have the larger valves, they're going to have smallish runner volume.

081, 416, & 601 305 castings have the same port sizes as 083 350 TPI castings.

That's not saying much though, LOL. May or may not even be an upgrade, and its not exactly an easy thing to port a set of iron heads.

Try checking on the bottom side of the heads, between the valves.

How about the top side, under the valve covers, between the valves.

Took me just under 10 hours bench time for both heads. Had I used carbide bits for the rough cutting instead of rolls, it probably would have taken even less time.

Duh to me! That's what I was meant, sorry. That's where mine are.

Damn near any head that came on a 305 is best suited as a door stop. Like someone said earlier even the big valve heads had shit ports that cant be cleaned up enough to flow any kind of big volume. Would be good for some low end grunt though

With gen 1 heads you are better off getting after markets then going to a shop and having stockers worked on.

sorry to drudge up an old topic but if you can do some of the work yourself its well worth it, major downside to the heads is 1)casting boss for the valve covers 2) really rough casting(what stock head dosnt?) 3 bowl area needs cleaned up and smoothed out and 4) short side and long turn need smoother bends(on the long turn bigger pathways on the side of the valve guides) with carbide bits took me about 4 hours total.
a huge advantage is the have only 55cc chambers. to mill the guides for viton seals, clearance for up to .540 lift, clean and degrease, put stainless steel valves in, 3 angle valve job, put bigger 1.94 valves in, pay the have the valves deshrouded and mill the heads .030 to keep the compression the same, get new springs and retainers and new seals my total investment is $640 (after tax). my engine isnt running yet but people who have done the same have dynoed within 10-25hp of aftermarket heads. if you think it is worth it or not is up to you but for the $400 i save on the heads doing this(more for aluminum but granted they weight alot less) i can more then make up the power diff with nitrous.
