I have an 87 El Camino with the 262cid V6 and TBI. I'd like to swap in an LT1 and a 5 or 6 speed manual. Can anyone recommend a shop that would do this work in NJ/NY/DE/PA, or any surrounding state? I'm in NJ.

We're in Baltimore, MD. why would you want to do a swap to a LT1? they are a pain to deal with during the swap and afterwards it's a pain as well. why not LS1? We can do the swap no problem either way. Do you already have the engine?:dontknow:

I had the opportunity to buy an LT1 at a decent price, but that's done with.
I know you can't give a firm price without seeing the car, but what range do you guys generally charge to do an LS1/six speed swap, if I bring the LS1 and all computers, sensors, and belt-driven accessories (but no trans)? If I don't bring the LS1 and accessories, do you guys stock used/rebuilt motors?

We can go LS1 408 c.i. motor or higher, but you have to be careful with going to big or you will start to run into affectuing overall performanc of the power plant and longevity. It's not whether you can do it, it's how reliable it will be. I will have to get you a price on the new motor or a rebuild and installation regardless of whether you bring it or we supply it. I should have the answer tomorrow. What's your budget for motor plus all accessories and swap?

I'm looking for something reliable and that will pass NJ emissions, so I wouldn't want to deviate far from the stock LS1.
Is $7,500 unrealistic? I have the opportunity to buy an LS1 from an F-Body with around 80,000 miles and all accessories for $2200.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I don't want to mislead you into thinking this is something I can do next week, but I'm trying to get a price range so I can budget to do this in the near future.
Also, how long on average would my car be out of commission?

Also, how long on average would my car be out of commission? You can do a lot with $7500 (inc. purchasing the LS1 for $2200). Do you wanna run fuel injection or switch to a carb. setup. Either way, it can be done. Fuel injection, you're gonna need the engine wiring harness/PCM and then modify it to be a stand alone system 'cos there's nothing to plug into (pretty easy) and a high pressure fuel pump (inline with intank pickup should be fine) with a regulator and return line. You can even get a standalone harness if your engine doesn't come with it, there's a bunch of companies that can custom build it for you.
For carb. a low pressure pump with a low pressure regulator and return line. Many things to think of like what tranny? Is there a swap kit out there for engine/trans mounts or would it be a one-off custom build? Either way, talk to Jason as posted by Art and he can give you a realistic number on price and time. I can try to answer as much as I can if you post up your q's.
