UMI Torque arm/crossbrace mount install, mysterious clunk

Hey guys,
I just installed a non-adjustable UMI T/A and a new UMI transmission crossbrace that changes the front T/A mounting point from the trans tailshaft to the crossbrace on my 98 Z28, A4 trans. Since the install, I've been getting a clunk that sounds a lot like a broken transmission mount (had one a while back), but there doesn't seem to be much play in the trans when I try to push it off of the stock mount from underneath (maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch) with everything bolted up, so I don't think that's it (doesn't look damaged from the side, front or back either); I've been talking to Ryan from UMI and tried a couple of different settings on the front mounting point, but I'm still getting the clunk. It happens on hard acceleration, hard down and up shifts, and rarely during regular driving. It's not lowered, I have non-adjustable UMI LCA's and PHB also. Anyone else had a similar issue? Thanks for any help or advice you guys might have.

other than the noise how do you like that piece? I've been thinking of getting the same one, Have the rear stuff already, from what i see its a bolt on deal right? does it do anything to your ride otherwise? And could the noise be the exhaust hitting the cross piece, they seem to have a few different ones depending on what exhaust you have? I had a similar noise a long time ago when the car was fairly new and it was the trans mount broken, couldn't tell till they replaced it, looked fine installed, I tried a poly one but it transfered too much vibration to the cabin, I worried the TA will do the same?

Other than the noise that actually sounds like a broken tranny mount(had one a while back), the car feels much tighter, hooks better and has zero wheel hop. I posted this same issue on a similar site, and most of the responses I got lead me to believe that these cars have an inherent amount of slop in the rear-end that is covered up by the minimal flexing of the stock, stamped-steel suspension components....in other words, the sound was always there, just not as pronounced and couldn't be heard. My exhaust is pretty much stock with the exception of a Flowmaster-40 muffler, so I don't think that's causing the noise. But as far as the ride goes, the car feels easier to steer and will roast the tires from a stop with no problem, whereas before it tracked pretty bad and felt like it was being shaken to pieces by the excessive wheel-hop under heavy acceleration. The install was pretty easy; I replaced the transmission cross brace and T/A in a couple of hours with one jack and four jack stands in my garage. UMI makes good stuff!

I am off to bed and I do not have time at the moment to read your post in any detail, but I would strongly suggest calling UMI. They have great support and have always given me great advice with any problems I had.

I had a clunk from my UMI Adj TA hooked to my dana 60 hitting my floor pan.

I put my LCA's and PHB on and had a clunk. Ended up being my driver side LCA because I had to reuse a couple of the stock bolts and I THOUGHT it was tightened down all the way, but it definitely wasn't, thus causing the LCA to move up and down. So maybe double check all your bolts if you haven't already..

I had the same problem....but on mine it was because I had it to tight..
