I use Castrol GTX 5W-30, every 2500 or so miles. I'd stay away from the truck filter, Bawls... My buddy Bain just drained his crankcase all over the highway a couple of weekends ago because he bottomed out and broke his oil filter...

It's certainly a risk Cam, but the extra capacity doesn't hurt. Just have to be careful. FWIW, I usually run a longer filter (Mobil 1 M1-206) but I bottomed out once and it was enough to break the seal on the filter and leak oil, so now I run the regular filter (Mobil 1 M1-106 I think it is). I've also always ran Mobil 1 10W-30.
FWIW, the next oil change I'm switching to Amsoil's 5W-40 euro formula. Formulated to be good for 1 year or 15,000 miles, and I'll run an Amsoil filter as well. It will actually save me money in the long run as I drive less than 15,000 miles a year. I'm looking at one $65 oil change as opposed to two $40 oil changes a year.

I'm about to start running Royal Purple, since Mobil 1 has gone up so much there's very little price difference now. Plus its available at Pep Boys 2 miles from my house.

Okay, I don't have a 4th gen, but when I saw the topic line, I couldn't resist.
Just out of curiosity, where are you guys getting this "AMSOIL Syntec(h)" stuff? "Syntec" is a Castrol name.
Anyway, I've been using various AMSOIL products since 1983. In the Camaro, I'm using the 10W-30 Synthetic (as well as in the other passenger cars in the family fleet). In the '57, Series 3000 5W-30 HDD Synthetic (and in the horse trailer tow van). And AMSOIL oil and air filters in all, along with ATF and gear lube and grease. All on one-year or 25,000 mile oil/filter change intervals, with an oil filter change at the half-way point.
For the record, AMSOIL European formula is 5W-40. The 0W-40 is a motorcycle oil. http://www.amsoil.com/products/motoroils/index.aspx

I use Mobil 7500 5W20. But I am thinking of going back to Pennzoil 5W20, its almost as good and is cheaper while its also a semisynthetic. I use either WIX filters or a NAPA filter...which is made by WIX. -Tim

Which ever synthetic is on sale, usually M1 or Syntec.
To me synthetic is synthetic, no matter who makes it.

the thing is that Mobil 1 is full synthetic. Castrol Syntec(except for GC), is actually really refined dino oil/synth mix

Exactly. I am swapping the SS over to Royal Purple as soon as this oil change is up. Going to swap out all the other possible fluids as well to Royal Purple.

i have yet to change the oil in my car... it has about 1000 miles on the new motor... so what would you guys reccomend that is avaiable around here?(Casper, Wyoming) I dont want to have to order oil. lol
I think valvoline is good oil... But i was thinking something like Mobil 1. But if i can find royal purple should i go that route?

1000 miles after a rebuild or a new motor? Your definately ready for a change, hopefully some of this info may help...
The new Pennzoil (post Y2K)is a Hydrocracked motor oil, Hydrocracking is the best and most expensive way to purify oil. There are currently only 3 companies that do it. Conoco, Motorcraft(made by Conoco), 76 and Pennzoil. I have tried Mobil 7500 5W20 and after 2500 miles, I am not so happy with it as it doesnt feel nearly as slippery as the other oils I have used with the same mileage use. Havoline, Valvoline, and the 80% of non-recycled Castrol is HydroFinished the other has been known to be recycled oil but not confirmed, which is a cheaper way to clean impurites out. Be aware of using anything that says it's Parraffinic, thats what causes sludge if used for extended amounts of time. Kendall used to be Parrafinic, but I think they quit making that blend due to the number of cars that had to have rebuilds due to sludge. Most House brands are Parrafinic blended as its the cheapest way to make it. I dont think that the blend is able to meet SL requirements -Tim
* Quaker State oil is not Hydrocracked like Pennziol even though it is corporately owned by Pennzoil.

Yep, the base oil is the same, the differences in Synthetic is the additive package. Not the base oil.
