Which is better and why?

Since as far as I can tell the Hemi is a 100% rip off of the LS1, I say the LS2 is superior. When GM finally gets around to putting DOD on the LS2 then this won't even be a debate.

One thing I have read before is the Hemi had to go to 2 plugs per cyl to meet emissions standards...something the LS1 didnt' have to do. Inefficiency of the chambers?

Well, I own a Hemi and an LS1 and I've driven the LS2 quite a bit. In simple terms here is what I think:

Stock:
LS2>Hemi>LS1

Modablility:
LS1>LS2>Hemi

Modded:
LS2>LS1>Hemi

It shuold get interesting when the SRT-8's come out with thier 425hp Hemi's.

.

i'm with ya on every part but this one... the fastest ls1 is faster then the fastest ls2 :P

because i dont see much advancement in teh ls2 over the ls1 i dont know about that...

however.... i think once it hits the open maket, the LS7 will reign with an iron fist ;)

That's b/c the LS2 hasn't been out long enough. I was assuming identical mod for mod on each motor.

LS7 boy i cant wait. My buddys dad got tired of only having 440 rwhp so hes doing a heads and cam LS7 for the Z28. AHHHHHHHHHH. About the modibility for the Hemi and the LS2. I really dont think either of them will open up until the new camaro comes out (provided it has an ls2) and the new challenger comes out ( if it has the 5.7). Think about it most popular tuner engines where available in a low dollar high performance vehicle. The Gto doesnt do it for the LS2 because its not that popular and its not cheap. The Charger, 300c, and Magnum dont do it for the Hemi because they are not much of performance car.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Sure a Chevelle LS6 was "just" a malibu, but you sure as hell paid a ton more than for a base Malibu. While the classic mussle was based on cheap cars, the actual muscle models were definitely not low-dollar.

Im not saying to have a great engine it has to be low dollar, Im saying to have a widely embraced engine for tuners it has to be low dollar. No doubt the LS6 was a mean monster. And most of those engines were not well embraced by everyday tuners. Sure all the drag racers had them but most normal 9-5 guys had the SBC and they would soup it up because it had a lower initial cost and would make decent power with some mods.

The ls2 isn't in the hands of near as many enthusiasts as the ls1 is primarily do to the lack of an affordable platform to get an ls2 in. This will cut the throat of the ls2 and limit it's aftermarket success.

This is very true. People are starting to build LS2's though from the ground up.

The 5.7 liter hemi does respond really well to mods. My uncle has a Dodge ram with the hemi in it just like my dads and he did shortie headers, running through stock exhaust and gained 34 ft-lbs. Thats the only mod he had done then.

I'll do full exhaust on mine sometime.

Fo shizzle, my nizzle  . Not to mention that the SBC will fit in just about anything (even if you DO have to cut the floor back, extend the dog house, and move the transmission mounts back, the SBC WILL bolt right up to the frame of a certain '85 Astro :D ).

The new 5.7 hemi is a beast when modded. 81 hp from a cam change(Newest Edition of Hot Rod). Lets see an LS1 do that.

from the way I've heard the new hemi is a nightmare to tune, the pcm is in a code that is extremely difficult to mess with

I'm sure its been done.

I don't trust HR anyway...those mass appeal mags do lots of dyno tricks. They probably accidentally forgot to mention they took the whole air cleaner assembly off or added headers too, LOL

It had headers but that was with the base line and it was like 396 hp i think. All they did was bump the Rev Limiter and do a Cam.

are we talking aout motors or the cars lol . umm who cares what it dynos what does it run when they weigh a shit load  compare a hemi motor to a ls2 all you want what are the times between 2 and there is your winner . the new srt8 does have impressive dyno numbers just lacks the track numbers seen them run on the track and on the street not impressed at all for the money/hp. just my .02
