Hey guys, I'm having trouble locating the flasher for my car. Do I need to take off that cover next to the fuse panel under the steering column?? 'Cause it ain't in the fuse box... It's an '86 Trans Am BTW.

Okay, so I found the flasher and it took me about 30 minutes to replace. Still no turn signals, what else could be wrong? Taillights work, but neither taillights nor amber lights in front light up or blink? Does that flasher have more than one way to plug in?

I posted this in the 3rd gen section, but only got 7 views so far, maybe I can get an actual response here.

Its been years ago but my first car was 1990 firebird. If I remember correctly (which I think I do) the hazards and the turn signals each had a separate relay. They were under the steering column. I not sure why it took you 30 minutes but yes they should only plug in one way.
If they not even lighting up it sounds more serious. Sounds like you need get a wiring diagram and hunt down your problem...

Replied to your other post...like I said usually if its just a flasher relay the lights will come on but not flash...sounds more serious than a flasher relay...
Do you have a chilton's manual or equivalent?

The flasher is tucked in behind the OBD I port, I had to remove some of the underdash panels to get to it. I've got a Haynes manual and a Chilton guide, but it's in Columbia and I'm about 60 miles away. The only thing I can think of that would be considered a "serious problem" would have been caused by a small fire I had a couple summers ago. I replaced the alernator and forgot to take off the negative cable :homer: . Anyhoo, a couple wires got damaged during that mishap (that clump of wires near the battery) and I'm thinking they kinda corroded through a bit.
Another thing too... I might actually have to replace the turn signal switch itself, 'cause my cruise control doesn't work either... I wonder...

Lol...sounds like you got a few issues...but how doesn't right? Hey could be the switch...or if you burn up there wires...
Anyway I might still have my 3rd gen chiltons somewhere...I'll try to look when I get home....:LS1LT1flag:

This might be a dumb question, but did you already look to make sure you didn't blow any fuses. I had some cables melt in my 89 and it gave me some similar problems. The melted wires were grounding out and blowing my fuses now and then.

  :notworthy :notworthy I can't figure out why, but that's what happened. That's what happened! Maybe the fuse got old and sorta dry-rotted the outside and corroded the inside?? Now if only my instrument panel will stop blowing fuses... I go through a pack of 5- 20AMP fuses a day now.
