View Full Version : New Tech Advice Reputation/Ranking System

We've just launched a new reputation system for rating other users on their tech knowledge. If someone gives you some great tech advice or help, just click on the little scales of justice in the lower left corner below their username and add to their reputation.
This accumulates over time, and the number of little green dots under their username increases as the rep increases.
This is a quick way to look at a person's response and know that their advice is helpful. We're also going to work on some perks for people with really high reputations, like free supporting memberships or other special site privileges or something.
Also looking at something besides the little green dots, like little mini rocker arms.

Neat tool, so recommending mountainous terrain in the Everglades WOULD NOT get you any brownie points? (lol)
Great concept IF NOT abused for personal vendetta's, if you know what I mean! Just my cents Chris.

Its like everything else...should be taken with a grain of salt. We realized that sometimes postcount can be mistaken for actually knowing what you are talking about.
Your postcount will contribute in a tiny way to reputation, but most of the rep score is going to come from people giving you "votes" in essence.
We have a good group of folks here, so I don't expect there to be a lot of personal vendettas being exacted through the reputation feature.
And its specifically for tech...not for if you got into a flame war in the lounge or the other user jipped you on a part he sold you in the classifieds.

Dang, and right after my philisophical post about LS1 cam selection....oh well, haha
I think it's a great idea, and a way to sort of "rank" the advice someone is giving you~!

Too bad the reputation system is only for Tech, otherwise I'd give you a few points for the idea :P

pfft, everyone knows I don't know what I'm talking about.
Its a good idea, but I hate to say it but I don't think people will use it. But thats just my opinion, it might get used alot, only one way to see. :LS1LT1flag:

If nobody uses it, its not like its taking up a lot of space or resources...so there's no real downside IMO.

im glad you made it for tech only cuz there is another board im on that it is for everything so it can be used for vendetta's so people's reps suffer when the actually do know what theyre talking about, great idea

Another board I know of that uses it, uses it for everything. It's kind of meaningless on there now. Everyone has 40k+ rep points.

But it might work amazingly well on here, lol.

Idea...I'm going to see if I can disable negative ratings...
That should remove the temptation to go after people by reducing their points.

I agree, there really isn't a reason to give someone negative points in a tech environment.
Chris 96 WS6

OK, negative rep is disabled. This should be fairly abuse-proof now.

i dont understand why you would have a problem with anyone on this board mainly for the fact we all have one common enemy....the pony.... DUM DUM DUMMMMM... and the plot thickins:LS1LT1flag:

A good way to build up your rep points guys, is to write up a good HOW TO: on a topic you are fluent with....who knows maybe it will even get stickied.

What? Not many people would think to microwave ice-cream...
Oh, by the way, I see where it says I have reputation but is there a way to see exactly which thread you got it from? Not so much from the person but from the thread would be a good positive way to show what type of tech is helping folks
