My car has a slight miss to it.....but plugs and wires have been changed within a few hundred miles. it has an oil leak around the crank, which will be getting fixed when we open the block to reseal and do an LT4 hot cam. it also has a leak out of the water pump, very slow leak as the coolant is still topped off in the overflow tank at current. plugs are Champion Double Plats professionally gapped to .35 and the wires are MSD Street Heat 8mm plug wires. I have a dynojet printout of my car producing 270whp on the dyno but you can see jumps on the horsepower and torque through out the rev range everywhere and my mechanic noticed a very slight miss when it was on the dynojet. we are planning on changing the water pump when we fix the oil leak and do the camshaft install and are looking at an optispark replacement in hopes of fixing the miss. so my question is......will any model of optispark work on my 1996 z28 or do I need to find one specifically mentions that works on a 1995 or higher. I found a killer deal on an optispark on amazon with a harness for $97 plus shipping and its not an accel brand but it mentions it only works with the early years.
Do not buy a cheap opti. You will regret it. For China made or reman parts store opti, there is 50-50 chance that it will be bad right out of box. If your lucky enough to have it work, then you have 50-50 chance that it will fail within a few hundred miles.
Buy only GM, Delphi, or Msd opti. PERIOD.
If your mechanic has an oscilloscope, he can check the low & high resolution pulses being sent out from opti. When car acts up, look for changes of pulse waveforms.
When you replace water pump, be sure to drive a plastic vacuum fitting into wp weep hole. Then sear where you installed fitting, attach tubing and route tubing away from opti. That way next time wp seal fails, opti won't take a bath.
Optis come in 2 types. Type 1 spline drive is for 93-94 f-bodies. Type 2 pin drive is for 95-97 f-body. shbox.com has pics of both types.
would the jegs model optispark be ok? im seriously working at a dead end job and all ive done is dump money into this car and its starting to become a headache
Sorry, but I don't have part numbers in my info library.
But, you can go online and find the part numbers. As of now, I believe Msd is the only one of the three that is all new. The others are rebuilt units. You might find a new unit if you look hard enough.
I have a new msd opti I bought in 2009. Still in the box. But it's a spline drive type 1 opti for the 92-94 f-body and corvette.
I had a 94 9C1 for about 7 years that I regularly sprayed the motor down at a car wash. i always tried to keep the full blast of water off the opti. It has a new one when I got the car and got replaced about 80k miles later.
Mine just died on the driveway, the only warning was a small misfire the previous day and it not starting up the following day.
You can't get much luckier though than breaking down on the drive.
